AFL_Academy_logos

The SAASTA AFL POWER Academy will be holding a trial for the 2015 squad of 30 on Friday 28th of November at 3:30pm for fitness testing and Saturday 29th November at 9am for a trial match at PAFC, Alberton Oval.

An information session for staff and parents will follow the trials for successful students providing details about the educational requirements of the program and the impact it may have on their schooling.

South Australian Aboriginal Sports Training Academy (SAASTA) and The Port Adelaide Football Club are proud to announce the continuation of its partnership, which will see the second year of the SAASTA AFL POWER Academy operate out of the club’s state of the art facilities at Alberton in 2015.

The primary focus of the academy will be to assist schools in driving the retention and success rate of Indigenous students in the SACE compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts. Additionally students will be engaged, supported and encouraged to progress their abilities and reach their dreams of a career in Australian football.

Eligibility for entry into the academy there are a number of ‘Key Performance Indicators’ which students will be required to achieve and maintain which include but are not limited to:

•           Be enrolled to study the SACE at a South Australian school

•           Maintain a minimum 80% attendance rate across all subjects throughout the 2014 school year

•           Achieve academic success in all subjects (C grade or better)

•           Adhere at all times to the schools behaviour management code

•           Be identified as a talented footballer

The SAASTA AFL POWER Academy will commence in week 2 of term 1 of the 2015 school year with students required to attend the Port Adelaide Football Club 1 day per week for 40 weeks. During this time students will be enrolled to study the Certificate III in Sport & Recreation which will contribute up to 50 Stage 2 credits toward their SACE.  Students who have already completed their Certificate III qualification will study a sports-based Stage 2 subject worth 20 credits.

Weekly sessions will be split between a range of theory and practical tasks related to the qualification and will be delivered by expert lecturers from TAFE SA in conjunction with Port Adelaide Football Club and SAASTA staff. In addition academy footballers will receive mentoring from Port Adelaide players and SAASTA mentors, compete in football games and training sessions, undergo genuine work experience in an AFL setting and participate in personal development activities. We plan to travel with the AFL Power team to various locations interstate to play curtain raiser games including Alice Springs, NT for the AFL Indigenous Round.
